Below is a snip from the 1941-42
Pendleton city directory which I think provides sufficient evidence
that cards were played there.

Three Sheehan brothers--William,
Howard & Joe--opened up a billiard hall/cardroom called the "Cozy" in
Pendleton, Oregon in the 1910's and ran it there at least into the
1930's. All three died in Portland, OR: William and Howard in the 40's
and Joe in 1966. Joe was supposedly a bootlegger (a pool hall run by a
bootlegger--think they gambled some there?). Their nephew Pat is still
involved in the billiard business in Portland (apparently one of the top
table restorers in the world).
